The Palace was constructed in 1795 in Kerala-Dutch architecture by Ramavarma Thampuran (Shakthan Thampuran). The palace is under the care of Archaeological Department and a historical museum functions here. Some of the articles displayed in the museum include Bronze statues, coins, household utensils made of copper and bronze, remains of stone age, indigeous plants and trees etc.The palace also has a very ancient Sarpakaavu or Serpent Grove, which is a place for worshipping the serpents.
The Palace is also called Vadakkekkara Kovilakom since its located in the north of Thrissur round.
