Punnathur Kotta is situated 2 km from the Guruvayoor Sree Krishna Temple is in Thrissur district of Kerala The Kotta houses the Elephant Fort (Punnathoor Ana Kotta) which is the largest centre for captive elephants in the world.
The Punnathur Kotta was formerly a palace and a fort under Punnathur Rajas. The Palace and premises were purchased by Guruvayur Dewaswom and the elephants belonging to the temple are kept here. Presently 60+ elephants are in the fort. Elephants and Mahouts are being trained here.
The Punnathur Elephant Camp is a good place to visit especially with Kids for the massive number of captive elephants being displayed here. All elephants have their own names and history.
