Government College of Fine Arts College Thrissur Admission Courses

Government College of Fine Arts, Thrissur is a fine arts college situated in the City of Thrissur. The College was started in 1910 and was known as Technical Industry School. Later in 1939 it was upgraded to trade school and in 1943 it was developed as the Government Occupational Institute. In 1972 it was upgraded as the Government Institute of Arts. In 2000, the College was affiliated to University of Calicut and changes its name to Government Fine Arts College.

Government College of Fine Arts, Thrissur is one of the premier centers of fine art education in Kerala, which celebrates the Centenary in 2010. Affiliated to the University of Calicut in 1997, this institution has entered into a new phase of its development; it’s gathering a new momentum to provide young talents of the state with quality training and infrastructure facilities in the stream of fine arts.

The institution started functioning in 1910 in the name of ‘technical commercial industrial school’ under the auspices of the erstwhile Cochin dynasty and imparted training on art and craft. During the second world war the institution was renamed as govt. trade school and art and craft subjects were got integrated. For some time the institution was known as govt. occupational institute and later it was known as govt. institute of fine arts, conducting five year national diploma courses in painting, sculpture and applied art.

Many industrious individuals who have established themselves later in life have been trained in this institution in their youth. Former Chief Minister and veteran politician Sri. K. Karunakaran was a student of this institute before dedicating his life for politics. Artist Namboothiri had learnt art here before going to Madras School of Art. Eminent artist and Former Municipal Chairman of Thrissur, Sri. V. Sankaramenon, was the superintendent of this institution. Noted film makers like Sri. P.N. Menon, Sri. Bharathan, Sri. Ambili and actor Sree Raman were once the students of this institution. Many of the contemporary Painters, Sculptors and designers are the prestigious alumnus of this institution. Internationally acclaimed painters like jyothibasu, tv santhosh and murali cheeroth are once the students of this institution. Renowned painters like tm aziz, kk mohammed, rathidevi, reji arakkal, sujith sn were also students of this institution.
