Cyclonic Storm NILOFAR to hit Kerala Coast?



Indian Meteorological Department has issued a warinign against the cyclonic storm named 'NILOFAR' in the western coast of India which includes the Arabian sea. Media has warned people living in the western coast including Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka and Kerala to be cautious against NILOFAR.

The press release from MET department is as follows:

The cyclonic storm, ‘NILOFAR’ over westcentral and adjoining southwest Arabian Sea moved
northwards, intensified into a severe cyclonic storm and lay centred at 0530 hours IST of 27
th October, 2014

Under the influence of this system, rainfall at most places with isolated heavy to very heavy falls would
commence along coastal districts of Saurashtra and Kutch from 30th October morning. Intensity would
increase gradually with heavy to very heavy fall at a few places and isolated extremely heavy falls from
night of 30th
. Squally winds speed reaching 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph would commence along
and off Gujarat coast from 30th October morning and would become 100-110 kmph gusting to 125
kmph at the time of landfall. Sea condition along and off Gujarat coast will be rough to very rough from
30th October morning and would become very high to phenomenal from afternoon of 30th October

Damage expected
Extensive damage to thatched roofs and huts. Minor damage to power and
communication lines due to uprooting of large avenue trees. Flooding of escape routes.

Action suggested: Fishermen out at sea along and off Gujarat coast should return to the coast. Total
suspension of fishing operations. Coastal hutment dwellers to be moved to safer places. People in
affected areas to remain indoors.
