Thrissur Zoo or the State Museum
& Zoo of Thrissur (usually known as Thrissur Zoo) is a 13.5-acre (5.5
hectare) zoo that opened in 1885 in the heart of Thrissur City
near by Maharajas Technical Institute, Thrissur. It’s one of the oldest zoos in
country and is home to different kinds of animals, reptiles, and birds. The zoo
compound includes of natural history museum and an art museum that exhibits the
socio-cultural heritage of the region. The Thrissur Zoo is 2 kilometers from
the Thrissur City center and is open from 10:00 AM to 6:30 PM (Mondays are off
days). All kind of cameras are allowed in the park for a particular fee.
The zoo mainly consists of
Zoological Garden, Botanical Garden, Art Museum, and Natural History Museum in
its compound.
Wildlife animals at the Thrissur
zoo includes tigers, lions, deers, sloth bears, monkeys, hippopotamus, camels,
cobras, kraits, vipers, rat snakes, pink flamingos, mithun (an almost 6 feet
cow) of the north-eastern hills, and lion-tailed macaques. There is also a
special building which is called ‘The House of Snakes’
Entry Fee - Rs. 5 per person Adults,
Rs. 3 per person Children, Rs. 5 Cameras (still), Rs. 500 Camera (Videography), Timings - All days
of the week except Monday, 10:00 AM - 6:30 PM Visit Duration 1 to 2 hours.
Thrissur Zoo is being planned to be
shifted at Puthur to an expanded area with its current 13.5 acres (5.5 hectare) to 306
acres (124 hectare).
